1. Today is "International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking". The theme this year is, "Make Health Your New High in Life, Not Drugs".

2. The Indian Army on Wednesday launched a website-suryahopes.in— to provide updates on the where abouts of people stranded in disaster-hit Uttarakhand. The site also provides information about the location of people, helpline numbers, lists of those rescued and their current location.

3. Prime Minister Manmohan Singhalong with UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday flagged off the first train connecting Banihal in Jammu region with Qazigund in Kashmir Valley. It has been constructed at a cost of Rs 1,691 crore.

22.The US economy growth has been revised downward for thefirst quarter of the current year due to weak business investment and lower consumer spending. US GDP grew at an annualized pace of 1.8% compared to earlier estimation of 2.4%. US consumer spending, which accounts for three-quarters of US economic activity, grew at a weaker pace of 2.6%, compared to previously estimated 3.4%.

23.Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi have inaugurated a train service between Banihal in Jammu region and Qazigund in Kashmir today. The prestigious rail link, which includes the longest rail tunnel in India, has been constructed at a cost of 1,800 crore rupees. This train service will provide an all-weatherlink to the Kashmir valley, which often gets cut off in the winter season due to heavy snowfall.

24.Shri Krishna Chaudhary, IPS has been appointed as DirectorGeneral, National Disaster Response Force and Civil Defence (NDRF&CD). He will succeedP M Nair who retired on 31stMay this year. Calamities brought about the realization of the need of having a specialist response mechanism at National Level to effectively respond to disasters. This realization led to the enactment of the Disaster Management Act on 26 Dec 2005. The NDMA was constituted to lay down the policies, plans and guidelines for disaster management.

25.Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Ltd (TCGL) has won theprestigious “CNBC Awaaz Travel Award 2013″ for the best state tourism board for a second time in row in Mumbai on Monday.The award was received by Vipul Mittra, State Principal Secretary, Tourism, Civil Aviation and Pilgrimage. The seventh series of the awards, presented by Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC), aims to recognise organisations, destinations, infrastructure and service providers dealing in the tourism industry, according to a press release here. Earlier this month, Gujarat also won the “Best Emerging Destination (Indian)” for the Lonely Planet Magazine India Travel Awards 2013.
